This website is about me trying to put into words what I think enlightenment is. And why fundamentally it is “predatory”. Of course I need to define what I mean by “predatory” but I’ll save that to another post.
Poet David Whyte tells the biblical story of Saint Peter waking in the storm at night in the boat with the other disciples out on the lake. And seeing Jesus walking across the water towards him. And in the story Peter is asked to step out of the boat onto the water and walk towards Jesus across this angry surface. This is not just Christian imagery because when you are taking a step towards anything worthwhile you always feel that you are stepping onto a surface that will not hold your weight. And in this image you are stepping towards something incredible precious to you. What holds you at the surface, what enables you to walk across that difficult terrain is the depth of your attention on what calls you. And as soon as you lose that attention as Peter did, as soon as you take your eyes off what calls you, you start to slip beneath the surface of the waves. And so here enlightenment in the Christian tradition has something to do with the way that you belong to the world.
Following a 4th Way path is fundamentally about being in the world, belonging to the world. No guru’s except you. No paths to follow only the path you uniquely make.
